MACON, GA — Wesleyan College celebrated the achievements and global impact of acclaimed educator Aditi Misra as she addressed the Class of 2026 and received the honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, during the College’s commencement ceremony on May 16, 2026.

Misra, an internationally respected academic leader with nearly four decades of experience in education, was recognized for her extraordinary contributions to educational leadership, women’s empowerment, and student-centered learning.  Misra was the Founding Principal of Delhi Public School Gurgaon and currently serves as Director of five schools dedicated to academic innovation, holistic development, and educational equity. Through her leadership, thousands of students across India have benefited from transformative educational opportunities.  And, this honorary degree recognizes not only her lifelong commitment to academic excellence but also a career that reflects Wesleyan College’s call to accelerate equality for women.

“Aditi Misra embodies the values Wesleyan College seeks to instill in every graduate - leadership, compassion, service, and a lifelong commitment to education,” said Wesleyan College President Meaghan Blight. “Her work has transformed countless lives, and we were honored to recognize her extraordinary contributions during this year’s commencement ceremony.”

Before graduates, faculty, families, and alumnae gathered on Wesleyan’s historic campus, Misra delivered a message centered on purpose, empathy, resilience, and intentional leadership, encouraging graduates to embrace lives rooted in meaningful service and authenticity.

“There’s always a choice,” Misra shared. “Choose wisely. Choose what you really want to do, not what others expect of you. When choices and chances come together, you will find your character becoming stronger, more humane, and more ready to face whatever the world may bring.”

Throughout her visit, Misra embraced opportunities to personally connect with the Wesleyan community beyond the commencement stage.  She spent time with members of the College’s Education Department discussing both the similarities and differences between Indian and American educational systems. She also joined Wesleyan’s South Asian Women Empowerment Society for lunch - sharing stories, experiences, and cultural connections that brought a meaningful sense of home and community to campus for many of our students.

An accomplished author, mentor, and dancer, Misra has received numerous honors throughout her career, including the Karmaveer Chakra Award, the Maharatna Award from iCONGO, and the Teachers Award from the Central Board of Secondary Education. She also continues to mentor educators through the CBSE Centre of Excellence and serves as President of the Gurgaon chapter of the Haryana Progressive Schools’ Conference.

As a graduate of Lady Shri Ram College for Women in New Delhi, Misra spoke during her visit about the enduring importance of women-centered education and the role it plays in developing confident, compassionate leaders.

“I believe that a strong woman educates her children differently and becomes a role model for her daughter as she grows up,” said Misra.  “Women’s education across the globe is very special and needs to be given the space it deserves.”

In speaking to Wesleyan’s graduates, including those beginning a career in education, Misra emphasized the profound responsibility educators hold in shaping future generations.

“Anyone who takes on the role of a teacher is nation-building,” she said. “You have to exhibit unconditional love to your students because only then will they learn best.”

Reflecting on what continues to inspire her after more than four decades in education, Misra shared a message that resonated deeply with graduates and guests alike: “Children give me hope. They are what we make them.”

Rooted in compassion, resilience, empathy, and purposeful leadership, her message to graduates reflected the enduring spirit of Wesleyan College and the rich promise of what’s to come for the Class of 2026!
