From Here to Career: Wesleyan Graduate Launches Accounting Career at Macon Housing Authority

MACON, GA — When Kaziah Hutchings crossed the Commencement stage on May 16th, she did so with more than a Wesleyan College degree in hand. Thanks to a combination of faculty mentorship, career development support, and an internship that evolved into a full-time opportunity, Hutchings had already launched her career with the Macon Housing Authority.

The May 2026 accounting graduate joined the Macon Housing Authority after completing an internship with the organization's finance department, where she demonstrated the initiative, professionalism, and technical skills that impressed organizational leaders and earned her a permanent position.

That opportunity began with a chance encounter on Wesleyan's campus. While walking near Foster Lake, Hutchings met Macon Housing Authority CEO Mike Austin and struck up a conversation about her future career plans. After learning she was studying accounting, Austin encouraged her to reach out about internship opportunities. Hutchings followed through, secured an internship, and ultimately turned the experience into a full-time accounting role.

"She took it upon herself to walk up to us, introduce herself, and start a conversation," said Austin. "That impressed me immediately. And, as we talked, I thought, 'This young lady has some wherewithal.' Here we are months later, and it's working out great. She's doing an awesome job."

While the internship opportunity emerged organically, Hutchings says Wesleyan's Center for Career Development played a critical role in preparing her for the experience. Through her work with Erin Bowler, the CCD's Executive Director, Hutchings received support with mock interviews as well as guidance on networking, professional dress, resume writing, and career exploration. Bowler also connected her with opportunities such as Wesleyan's summer internship program and professional networking events, including accounting-focused career fairs.

"Erin was working with me hand-in-hand," Hutchings said. "She helped me navigate internships, professional settings, and how to communicate and advocate for myself. She was a big part of helping me prepare for opportunities like this."

Faculty mentorship proved equally influential throughout Hutchings' academic journey. She credits associate accounting professors Megan McMahon and Kara Kostiuk, as well as Wesleyan Library Director Kristi Peavy, for helping shape both her professional aspirations and personal growth. Each provided guidance, encouragement, and recommendations as she pursued internship and employment opportunities.

"When it comes to Wesleyan's faculty and staff, they genuinely want you to succeed," Hutchings said. "Because of the College's size, professors know you. They notice when you're there; they notice when you're struggling, and they're always willing to help. That support made a huge difference in my journey."

According to Austin, it's that support that helps develop the skills today's employers are seeking and sets graduates like Hutchings apart in the workforce.

"Obviously, Wesleyan is providing a quality education, but it's also clear that students are learning people skills and professional skills," Austin said. "Anybody can learn the technical side of a job, but communication, initiative, and professionalism matter. Kaziah demonstrated all of those qualities."

Throughout her time at Wesleyan, Hutchings balanced academics with multiple jobs and campus leadership roles, including serving on the executive board of the Black Student Alliance, participating in the Student Government Association, working in Wesleyan's Entrepreneurship Lab, and holding several student employment positions on campus. Hutchings also completed a summer internship with Real I.M.P.A.C.T. Center, a STEM-focused organization serving girls across Middle Georgia, where she gained valuable experience in leadership, communication, and project management.

As she begins her accounting career with Macon Housing Authority, Hutchings is already preparing for her next chapter. This fall, she will return to Wesleyan to pursue a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance, further expanding the skills and expertise she will bring to the workforce as a proud "Double Wolf."

Reflecting on her experience, she encourages current and future students to embrace the opportunities available to them at Wesleyan.

"Talk to people, build relationships, and get involved," she said. "Wesleyan's faculty and staff go above and beyond for students. You never know where a conversation might lead."

Hutchings' success story reflects the impact of strong partnerships between Wesleyan College and the organizations that invest in student talent. As Wesleyan continues to expand internship and career opportunities, the Center for Career Development is actively building relationships with employers across Middle Georgia and beyond. Organizations interested in developing talent pipelines, hosting interns, recruiting graduates, or exploring workforce partnerships are encouraged to connect with the Center for Career Development.

"When organizations invest in Wesleyan students, everybody wins," Austin said. "The student wins, the company wins, and the community wins."
