The Wesleyan College soccer team opened the 2017 season with a 5-0 exhibition win over USC Salkehatchie. The Wolves performance made for a great coaching debut for first time head coach Ian Doherty, who hopes to see the winning ways continue this season.
Five Wesleyan freshmen made their collegiate debut with two leading the offense as goal scorers. Fetlework Blitch (2) and Sophia Borovsky combined to record three goals, while junior college transfer and Wesleyan newcomer Kourtney Mydlowski also found the back of the net for the Wolves. Senior defenseman Katie Tanner had a strong return to the pitch, also scoring in today's exhibition for Wesleyan. Sophomore Carlee Dykes and freshman Kayleigh Buie each played one half in goal, combining their efforts to keep USC Salkehatchie off the scoreboard.
"This was a good start for us," remarked first year head coach Ian Doherty. "We are beginning to settle into the way we want to play and the team is working well together. I was pleased with our performance tonight and thought we executed our game plan very well. I'm happy we created a lot of chances and kept a clean sheet defensively."
The Wolves play another exhibition game on Thursday, August 24 at 5:00 pm at home against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
