This spring break, seven students from Wesleyan's music program will travel to Florida to compete in the Southeast Regional Competition of Teachers of Singing.

We spoke with Anniston Smith, an Arts Management and Vocal Performance major, to gain insight into the competition and to explore the unique opportunities offered by the Wesleyan Music program.

“It's just a really good experience to get comments from judges on how to increase our musicianship. It also gives a great resume booster,” Smith said of SERNATS.

A distinguished panel of judges, all voice and music teachers from across the Southeast, evaluates students on their musicianship, acting abilities, intonation, and other key criteria. These talented competitors are vying for the opportunity to showcase their skills in the finale.

Anniston is enthusiastic about the opportunity to spend her spring break off campus, away from her hometown. This experience will enable her and her peers to enhance their education through practical, real-world opportunities for little cost.

Opportunities such as this, for many students, are also wonderful opportunities to form close bonds with peers and faculty.

“We’re really like a tight-knit community,” Smith said of the music program.

She chose Wesleyan because of its small class sizes and the strong mentorship offered, Which she believes are essential for her successful educational and professional development. She encourages students interested in the music program to just go for it!

“Think about your home. Think about where you’ll be and who you’ll be with,” Smith encouraged.

Anniston has developed an impressive portfolio of performances in her two years at Wesleyan. She has showcased her talents at various local businesses, performed at the opening of the downtown Wesleyan College Leadership Lab, had the honor of singing the national anthem at the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, and more!

Outside of blessing Macon with her vocals, Anniston serves as an active member of the Wesleyan community, serving on SGA and representing the voice of the student body to promote the community cultivated through our integrative programs.

Anniston had her own number during this year's STUNT competition.

We’re wishing Anniston and the rest of the competitors the best of luck as they travel to Florida to compete! Follow us @wesleyancollegega to keep up with our music students as they participate in the competition!

Wesleyan students choose to study here because they want to test their limits. The bar is set high because our students demand it. First for Women isn’t just a claim to fame - it’s a philosophy that explains why Wesleyan women continue to make history today.  Read More
