Wesleyan invites high school girls to join the College’s chapter of Girls Who Code (GWC), the first and so far the only club established in Central Georgia. GWC is free to 9th – 12th grade girls from public, private, and home schools. Bibb County GEAR UP 12th graders are strongly encouraged to apply, as they will also qualify for Wesleyan College math club/Lane Center mentors and more. The next cohort begins Saturday, August 26, 1:00 – 3:00pm/ Willet Library, Room 205/Wesleyan College, and meets every Saturday.
According to Girls Who Code: The U.S. Labor Department has estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs openings for computer-related occupations this decade, and the median job for people with a Computer Science degree pays around $80,000 to $100,000. Of the STEM fields, Computer Science and Computer Engineering have the highest median earnings for recent college graduates without advanced degrees, and only around 12% are women.
Led by Dr. Randy Heaton, assistant professor of mathematics, with the assistance of members of Wesleyan’s math club, Girls Who Code meets every Saturday in Willet Library. Girls Who Code and Wesleyan are a natural fit. There is no one better to inspire young girls to learn to code than Wesleyan women who have an enthusiasm for math and coding.
